KOI POND FILTRATION

The purpose of this site is to discuss various methods of koi pond filtration. It is a work in progress. The feature pond in this discussion was built in late summer of 2001. The pond construction budget only included a bead filter, UV and two pumps. Keeping in mind future needs for the filtration system, enough returns and bottoms drains were installed initially. Now that the pond has been running for over four (4) years, several additional technologies have been used for both mechanical and biological filtration. The first upgrade that was performed to this pond was the addition of a Rotary Drum Filter. The rotary drum filtration system described in the following pages is not a DIY project for the inexperienced. It involves machined parts, welding, automatic controls and some basic Engineering knowledge. The step by step instructions are provided for those who have these talents and desire a state of the art system. The second upgrade that was installed is a hybrid high flow rate shower with passive mechanical filtration. The Shower Filter described in the following pages is an easy type of DIY project and be accomplished for a relatively low cost.  Finally, an automated Sodium Thiosulfate dosing system has been added for the flexibility of adding make-up water to the pond. The equipment presented will be designed to filter at a rate of 18,000 GPH. Other upgrades are planned for the coming year so stay tuned.
